Family meetings that protect the board
A family forum should air hopes and grievances so the company board can stick to trading decisions. Here is a simple separation that prevents crossover chaos.
When family arguments land in board minutes, managers learn to stay quiet and customers feel the drift. Separating the family forum from the company board is one of the cheapest stabilisers available during succession.
A simple split
- Family forum: values, employment hopes for relatives, philanthropy, how the family talks about the firm in public
- Owners’ council: dividends, share transfers, major capital
- Company board: customers, safety, hiring for trading roles, performance
Not every firm needs all three forever. Many start with a family forum twice a year and a disciplined board monthly.
Ground rules worth writing down
No ambush topics, phones away when a relative’s employment is discussed, and a short note circulated within a week. If a decision needs legal force, it moves to the owners’ council and then to advisers — not into a heated kitchen conversation.
Family governance workshops walk families through this split with a one-page charter they can actually keep.
